Title: Making of a General : A Himalayan Echo
Author: Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Konsam Himalay Singh (Retd)
Publisher: Konark Publishers
Format: Hardcover
Genre: Nonfiction
Rating: 5/5 stars

Beginning in troubled times but working towards personal achievements, Retd. Lt. Gen. Konsam H. Singh's inspirational and fascinating memoir 'Making a General: An Himalayan Echo' attributes sucess to values like determination and self-confidence and shows how it is possible for anyone to achieve thier goal if they have the courage to persue it religiously. Through his memoir the author opens up key moments in his life that shaped him as a person and inspired him to achieve the acme of success through determination and hardwork. It is a moving memoir about life, challenges and hardships, love and loss that will surely inspire everyone, especially the youngsters.

Born in a remote village of Charangpat (Lake of the Dragonflies) in the south eastern foothills of Manipur Valley, Konsam sir was brought up in a loving home. He was physically weak, shy and scared of darkness, but against all the odds there was something which was unique in him, his undying spirit and dream of becoming a Brigadier in the Indian army. There was a time when his classmates and other people used to mock him for his impossible dream but their mocking was useless against his determination. From a shy, little north-eastern boy he became the first Lieutenant Gen. of the Indian Army of North East India. In his service of nearly 40 years in the Indian army he has ventured on many expeditions, including Mount Kanchenjunga, led an infantry battalion during the Kargil War and commanded a battalion on thr highest battlefield in the worldñm the Siachen Glacier among many other achievements. The work contains his insights and golden memories of the two years operations in Siachen and in Shyok valley with his troops and also his role as a policymaker in the South Block and Sena Bhawan in Delhi.

What makes this work distinct from other similar works is the thoughts and lessons he has passionately shared for the future generations in his memoir. He has shared all those lessons he learnt from his interactions with the soldiers over the years that made him a better administrator. It contains his learning experiences from colleagues and seniors in the army and his thoughts on various important issues such as 'Qualities of a General' and 'Ethical Leadership' on which he has discussed in detail in this work.

This book is also about this home state Manipur and its people, especially the youths and their contributions in the armed forces of India. He has shared his thoughts on people and how their aspirations are far removed from the ground realities. Besides, he has shared his insights on the various ethnic groups and their conflicts and tried to highlight and portray the changes that took place in the socio-cultural milieu over the years.

Overall it was truly an amazing experience going through this exceptional work. I give this memoir full 5 stars and highly recommend it to everyone.

Happy Republic Day to All. Jai Hind
