Funny, interesting and utterly entertaining, Shubha Sarma's latest work 'The Awasthis of Aamnagri' is an ode to families everywhere. The story unfolds at the fictional town of Aamnagri, a land known for its production of mangoes, where renowned lawyer Pandit Dinanath Awasthi lives with his grand family of seven children, twelve grandchildren and four pets at the 'Paradise' mansion. This is the story of the Awasthi family and how they enjoy life's little moments with love, care and affection towards each other. Yes, like any other family they do quarrel and have differences of opinion in various matters but when one gets into a problem, the whole family comes in his/her rescue. Much like mangoes they have a sweet and sour relationship. Our story unfolds with the arrival of a Babaji at the Paradise mansion who warns the awasthi family of an impending death.
Now to know what happens next you have to go through this exciting tale.
The first thing that I loved the most is the eloquent writing style. The choice of words and phrases, narrative technique and the use of colloquial hindi words gives an amazing reading experience. Next, I loved the character construction. Each of the characters have their distinct position and role in the story. I especially loved the characters of Panditji and Mataji with their innocent wrangling with one another. There were moments of surprise, fun and suspense all over the story. It reminded me the fun moments I have shared with my family over the years. What makes this novel unique is the way it instantly connects with the readers by making them a part of the Awasthi family.
The list of characters at the outset and the glossary page at the end is very helpful. The cover design by Misha Oberoi is absolutely beautiful as always, and it truly portrays the theme of the work.
Overall, a truly fascinating experience. Highly Recommend it.
