Synopsis-
The novella, written in the form of a soliloque, revolves around the character of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The plot captures the days after the crucifixion when Mary has moved to Ephesus, where she lives alone and frequently visited by two of Jesus's disciples (probably St.Paul & St.John) who wants to confirm the story of Jesus's resurrection from death after three days. But Mary doesnot want to confirm it since he has not witnessed it. She believes some cleaver people has used Jesus's reputation to serve their purpose. She does not even approve the miracles done by Jesus, but still she feels pain for the pathetic condition of his son and dreams about being united again with her family.
Characterization-
Apart from Mary, we are introduced to the character of Farina who offers food and water to Mary.We also come to know about Marcus, Mary's cousin from Cana. The empty chair at Mary's house symbolises Joseph, who is probably dead.We also come to know about Lazarus who was resurrected by Christ and her sisters Martha and Mary.
Language & Symbols -
The language is very simple and lucid.Throughout the novel, there prevails an atmosphere of suspense to sustain our interest. We also get a brief idea about Jewish culture and tradition. Various symbols like the hawk, symbolises christianity, symbol of artemis's statue symbolises bounty, fertility and beauty.
Critical Evaluation-
In this novel Toibin has given Mary a voice of her own, a chance to unveil her own thoughts, prejudices, beliefs and emotions. The idea of 'subaltern' as a literary theory which originated in the thoughts of Antonio Gramsci is a relevent lens to analyse this novella to observe the change of subordinate position of the character of Mary. I have enjoyed reading this novel and recommend everyone to givs it a try.
