Book Review | Generations (Talaimuraikal)| Neela Padmanabhan | Niyogi Books | Books and Beard Review |

Title: Generations
Author: Neela Padmanabhan
Translation: Ka. Naa. Subramaniam
Publisher: Niyogi Books
Genre: Fiction
Format: Paperback
Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Neela Padmanabhan's groundbreaking work, Talaimuraikal, translated into english by eminent tamil writer and critic Ka. Naa. Subramaniam as 'Generations' revolves around the tamil speaking Eranial Chettiyar community of Kanyakumari district on the Tamilnadu-Kerala border. The story, weaved around the rich culture and history of this community, takes the time span of almost 25 years.

The novel received widespread praise from critics and readers upon its initial release in 1968 for its brave declaration against the age-old dowry system. Besides, through this work author Padmanabhan strongly advocated for widow remarriage, women's right to divorce and women's right for a respectable life.

The story revolves around Diravi a sensible and practical man hails from this community. As he matures and started questioning about various rituals and traditions of his community to the village elders, he used to receive little or no answer from them. But the chains of his patience broke when he witnessed how his sister Nagammal has been wrongly accused as a barren woman and severely tortured by her impotent husband Vinayaka Perumal and his cruel mother. He decides to wage a war against the soceity for the rights of his sister Nagammal, who was rejected not only by his husband but also by the society which turn a blind eye against such inhuman behaviour in the excuse of tradition.

Nagammal’s mute grief and the society’s lack of courage and authority to speak against such injustice made him realize that he has to act against the ageold tradition for providing his sister the life she deserves. Diravi finds a suitable bridegroom Kuttlam and decides to initiate the remarriage of his sister.

To know what happened next you have to go through this exceptional work.

I absolutely loved the way author has skillfully dealt with the setting and the intricate narrative. The work provides a great deal of information about the chettiyar community. The best part of this work is its relevance in today's society, where the women still receives suppression and torture in different forms and degree from the society.

Overall, it was an amazing read. I give this work 4.5 stars and highly recommend it for everyone to read.

Happy Reading
