Book Review: Chhotu by Varud Gupta

Title- Chhotu: A Tale of Partition and Love
Author- Varud Gupta
Publisher- Penguin India
Genre- Graphic Novel
Format- Paperback
Year- 2019
Length- 192 pages
Rating- 4.8/5 stars

Author Varud Gupta's graphic novel chhotu not only explores the dynamics of human society but also shows us the mirror for self-evaluation. Set in the backdrop of India's Independence, the novel presents the character of Chhotu, a orphan who works as a cook with his foster father Bapu in Chandni Chowk. Chhotu, with his dreams and aspirations, likes and dislikes, captures the reader's heart instantly. Chhotu's deep infatuation for a girl in his class "Heer" leads to a series of events which shakes him to the core and shows him the harsh reality of the indian society.

I particularly loved the way the author has explored the issues of class division, class struggle and religious unity through anthromorphism. Perhaps by showing us the past through the eyes of the animals the author actually wants us to ponder over the future of India. The book reminds us the beauty of unity in diversity and points out the chief factors which makes India the largest democracy in the world.
The reason I loved this book so much is because unlike other graphic novels Chhotu does not represents India only, rather Chhotu is all those unfortunate souls who dares to dream, who aspires to do something productive and it is where the novel attains universality. It leaves us with numerous questions which varies from readers to reader. The beauty of this novel lies in its multiplicity of meanings and approaches, as it entertains a small child, informs an adolescent and encourages an adult reader to do something meaningful for the betterment of society and nation.

The cover image and illustrations by Ayushi Rastogi have breathed life into the story as it provides almost a cinematic experience and heightens the impact of the narrative.

Overall, it was an amazing read. I give this book 4.8 stars and recommend this book to everyone.

Happy Reading
