Author Bhim Singh Bobanga's latest work 'The Disappointing 5' not only entertains the readers with its gripping suspense and narration, but also explores the burning issues of modern youths and raises some salient questions on modern lifestyle and relationships. The story follows the life of five teenagers from the St. Xaviers School in the peaceful city of New Dwarka, and how they gradually matures in their understanding of the world.Though at first glance everything appears quite normal in their lives, but it is actually the silence before the storm. As the story unfolds, it takes us on a rollercoaster ride into their world where everyone of them has some secret to hide. From the corridors of St. Xaviers School to the dark, desolate alleys of New Dwarka in search of wanted criminals and child trafficking rackets, the novel takes us on a exciting journey which is equally entertaining and informative.
I think the beauty of this novel lies in the way the author has created an air of suspense throughout the novel. It is absolutely a page-turner and the author knows how to keep his readers at the edge of their seats with the mastery of his writing style and narration. Nowhere in the story it felt boring or overstretched. The story perfectly captures the life of modern youths with their problems and aspirations. I also loved the way the author has structured the plot and the characters which makes the reading experience utterly amazing. The novel explores the beauty of friendship and shows how the bond of friendship actually support us in every difficult situation.
Also, one thing I should definitly mention is the portrayal of homosexuality in his work. I absolutely loved the way Bobanga has explored the psyche of the homosexual people, giving the readers a chance to witness and understand their likes and dislikes, their pain and problems from a different light, which in turn force us to reevaluate our age-old beliefs about the binary conceptions of gender and the way we stereotype them.
At the introductory pages of the novel you will find some beautiful sketches of those five teenagers which actually helped me to connect with the story in a better way. Next, I liked the writing style of the author. The way he has kept the balance between the events of past and present in the story and the also the use of poetry is absolutely brilliant. In the epilogue there is one diary entry, which gives the novel a perfect ending.
This work is one of those rare jewels which is not published from a big publishing house, but as far as the content of the novel is concerned, it is far better than the so-called 'bestselling' romantic novels.
I highly recommend this work and encourage everyone to go through this amazing story.
Happy Reading
