Stories of Us the Common Man : Changing Perceptions by Bobby Sachdeva

Title- Stories of Us, the Common Man: Changing Perceptions
Author- Bobby Sachdeva
Publisher- Pan Macmillan India
Format- Paperback
Length-244 pages
Genre- Fiction
Rating-4/5 stars

A businessman by profession and an author by heart, Bobby Sachdeva can surely be counted among the best amateur Indian authors of the recent years who writes not merely to serve the purpose of providing entertainment, but to raise his voice against the various evils, prevailing in the society and force his readers to ponder over the pathetic situation.

In his debut work, Sachdeva has tried to provide his readers an inside view of the Indian society, where beneath the veil of glamour, wealth, tradition and culture, there remains only void and darkness. Like a modern sage Sachdeva speaks with his readers through meaningful stories to inculcate the long-forgotten universal ethics and values which makes us human. The 41 stories ranging from gender issues to the political and social evils, touches each and every aspects of human life and society. He has shared his insights on the flaws of human nature, importance of love and the value and changing dynamics of modern relationships.

Besides, he has also stressed upon the need of brotherhood and unity among communities for a better future. Not many writers dare to touch the subject of religious hypocrisy and politics in their debut work. But Sachdeva has raised his voice against the religious hypocrisy and blind faith in his stories "8 Bands", "56 Offerings", "Jaundice" , "When God Spoke" and "Impotent". Through his short stories titled "GST", "RTI" and "Notebandi" he has tried to present the prepective of those individuals who stays at the periphery of the national  discourse and rarely gets a change to speak for themselves. He has shown how those poeple are exploited by the society in stories such as "Pagli: the Crazy Girl", "Street Hooker" and "Garbage Collector".
As far as the writing style is concerned it is not exceptional but quite good.  I have read his second work "Once there was me" and I have observed a serious improvement in his writing style and narration. In this debut work he has used easy words for anyone with the basic knowledge of English language to enjoy the stories.

The cover illustrations done by Kamal Nishad and Ekta Parekh and the Cover design by Misha Oberoi adds to the beauty of the work. Their exceptional artwork has made the stories more alive.

Yes, I have enjoyed going through the work and I recommend this book to those who are slow readers and prefer to meditate over each words while reading like me.

I give this book 4 stars for the content and overall presentation.
